Q. My furniture is going/ has gone black. What can I do? What has caused this?
A. Black spotting can occur through tannic acid in the wood or airbourne spores. It is a natural process and is
to be expected, it will not affect the quality or durability of the wood. To remove the black spotting use an antifungal cleaner e.g. Dettol, using a thin bristle brush until black spots have gone.
Do not use soapy water to clean black spotting.
Q. My furniture has cracks on the ends/ is cracking?
A. All hardwoods lose their minerals/salts and as they evaporate cracks will appear on the end grain (tops of
chairs/end of tables/end of arms). This is normal. Sometimes the crack will open quite wide, especially in hot weather. They will close when it rains or is cooler. This cracking will not affect the stability of the furniture and in most cases occurs within the first few months and gets no worse. Treatment can help reduce cracking as the Teak Oil replaces some of the natural oil that is lost through evaporation.
Q. What is FSC®, does my Teak, Roble, Cornis, Pine or Mahogany come from sustainable sources?
A. FSC® means Forestry Stewardship Council which is a body that oversees the wood resources of countries all across the world. It is an organisation and it issues certificates to those countries whose wood is from a sustainable source.
Q. My table appears to have an uneven end or slats appear to have moved out?
A. All our products have joints which have built in tolerances for “movement” as wood is a natural product that expands and contracts with change of temperature and humidity. This will not affect the strength or
durability of the product.
The timbers we use for our products are extremely durable and able to resist the most inclement weather. They are therefore ideally suited to garden furniture.
Due to the weathering process and timber being a natural material, joints will become slightly offset and surface cracks will appear, particularly on the end grain and to a lesser extent on the surface within a few weeks. As with other hardwoods such as our FSC® 100% Teak or FSC® 100% Roble, this is the normal behaviour of timber, our furniture is designed with this in mind and its strength and durability will remain unaffected.
Our wooden products are a natural living timber, just like nature itself wood varies in shape and colour. Timber, even from the same tree, will vary in many aspects. The variation in colour is just one distinguishing feature of a product, as well as interlocking grain on our FSC® 100% Roble.
Stains such as spillages, bird droppings and mildew can be removed using a wood cleaner. Alternatively sand down using medium grit sand paper.
Lifting grain or cracks can be glued using a waterproof adhesive suitable for timber. Clamping may be necessary with excess glue being removed using a damp cloth. This area should be sanded once the glue is dried.
