The most successful gardeners are forward planners who think at least a season ahead, so now is the time to think about planting for garden colour in October and November.
Containers
For strikingly tall spikes of azure blue flowers, plant salvia ‘Blue Enigma’ in large containers. You’ll need a sunny spot and a pot that drains well, and you’ll be rewarded with an abundance of beautiful blooms. If you’re after both structure and colour, ornamental cabbages can make a quirky and effective centrepiece to a container display – Northern Lights is a popular variety with stunning purple leaves. Violas and cyclamen are great choices too, although do remember to feed them every so often to maximise flower growth.
Borders
With flowers from pure white through to deep pink, anemones will bring height, colour and interest to your borders throughout the autumn months. Honorine Jobert is a lovely variety, offering single flowers tinged with pink on the underside of the petals, with a subtle yellow centre.
Asters will also liven up your displays – try eurybis or symphyotrichum, commonly known as the New York aster, which has clusters of distinctive pale purple flowers in a daisy-like formation. Late flowering hydrangeas are a reliable choice too, and winter flowering pansies will give you pops of hot reds and pinks just when the rest of the garden is cooling down.
Hopefully, mild autumn weather will allow you to still be enjoying your Supremo Bari garden furniture, and you’ll be delighted to have created vibrant pots and flowering borders to keep your garden looking lovely.
