Tips for getting robins to visit your garden

Robins are a beloved sight in gardens across the UK.

This is down to their distinctive brown, white and cheery red colouring, along with their association with Christmas.

Not just a winter appearance, you can sit and view them from your Charles Taylor garden furniture at any time of year – if you plan properly.

Firstly, ensure to supply the correct food in your bird feeders. The main food that robins eat is insects, but fruit and seeds are also vital to them during the winter. Let sections of your garden get a little wild and overgrown, as that will breed invertebrates and insects that appeal to robins.

Robins can become permanent features of your garden if you make it a suitable spot for them to nest. Areas that offer decent shelter from predators, such as climbing plants and hedges, are popular picks, but robins are easy to please in nesting terms. Some even build their nests inside old, abandoned wellies!

Buying nest boxes will help attract these visitors, but ensure to select ones that open from the front. Make sure to place them where they are shielded by plants, like ivy, because robins won’t nest where their young are at risk from predators. Keep them at a height that will put them out of reach of cats.

For this reason, you should also make sure your feeders are well clear of any areas of dense cover, because predators can hide in those spots – a danger robins are well aware of!
