With the environment a concern for many, here are four simple ways make your garden more eco-friendly.
Limit your use of electricity in the garden
Opting for solar lighting and solar-powered water features is an effective way to avoid over-consumption of electricity in the garden. With an enormous range of options, from festive strings of lights illuminating your Charles Taylor garden furniture to practical pathway marker posts, you should be able to rely on solar energy from May to early October. Only using mains electric external lighting in the darker, duller winter months, when solar lights can’t function, could cut your garden’s electricity consumption by half.
Collect and reuse rainwater
Installing a water butt is an easy, low-cost way of reducing the amount of water you need to keep your garden looking great. Even if it’s just a bucket or an open container, by using collected rainwater rather than turning on the hose, you’ll be reducing your overall water output.
Compost waste
Much of our kitchen waste is actually organic material like vegetable peelings, tea bags and eggshells. All of this can go onto a garden compost heap – just avoid any meat products. Find a hidden corner, make a pile and turn with a fork every so often. Within a few months, you’ll be making your own nutrient rich compost, providing a haven for a whole ecosystem of helpful wildlife and saving money on commercially produced soil enhancers.
When it comes being environmentally friendly, small changes like this can make a big difference.
