Late March represents the start of spring, which means that there are plenty of activities you can do in your garden. These jobs range from tidying and maintenance work to early spring planting; you will certainly be busy, but you can always relax on your rattan garden furniture in between tasks.
Pruning
The most important piece of garden maintenance in March is pruning. There are all kinds of plants and flowers that will need cutting back, and you should particularly focus on any plants that flower in the summer; for example, Caryopteris, Buddleja and Lavatera.
Climbing roses and heathers should also be pruned during this time.
Planting
March and early April is a great time to get planting, because the worst of the winter weather should be past. This means the soil will be starting to soften, while the longer hours of daylight will also help your plants to grow.
If you want to sow flowers, the best bet will be hardy annuals like the Sweetpea. Forget-me-nots and pansies will also be great for planting though.
There are plenty of vegetables that you can get in the ground during March too. Peas, broad beans, parsnips and potatoes are just a few examples.
Tidying
Weed your garden beds during March, as they are likely to have been neglected throughout winter. Get rid of as many weeds as you can to give your seeds room to grow. This is also the month for removing winter garden protection, such as plastic bags.
March can be a hectic month for gardeners, but the work will certainly all be worth it when summer comes.
