It happens every year – you get the Christmas decorations down from the loft or out of the garage and you have to spend what feels like ages untangling fairy lights and fishing around bags for baubles. Inevitably, you discover that something has been damaged or lost over the year in storage.
Here are some simple tips to make putting up the Christmas decorations next year stress-free:
Time to recycle
As you take down your decorations, cast an eye over them for damage or basic wear and tear. If they are past their best, maybe it’s time to recycle them. Of course, you’ll have your favourites that stay with you for a lifetime, but generic decorations all reach a tired point eventually.
Have a system
Now you have decided what you are keeping, you need a system of storage. You might want to have a box per decoration colour or a box per room if you decorate multiple spaces in the house. It’s a good idea to keep all the tree decorations in one box and deconstruct your tree from skirt to top.
Christmas lights
Avoid the classic fairy light tangle by wrapping lights around pieces of cardboard. Label each piece as to whether they are tree lights or outdoor lights and then pop them all in a box together. No untangling or figuring out what goes where next year!
While it can feel a bit gloomy to take the decorations down after the festive season, it’s a satisfying feeling when you organise them and pack them away neatly. You’ll also thank yourself when next Christmas rolls around.
