The best feeling is relaxing on your rattan garden furniture and watching the birds make the most of your garden. If you’ve got a bird feeder, you’ll know the best way to keep the birds coming and enjoying the free seed. However, while bird feeders should be enjoyed by birds, they shouldn’t necessarily be enjoyed by squirrels. Although every animal has the right to visit your garden, squirrels have a tendency to leave birds without any food if they get near the feeder.
Grease your bird station
By slicking your bird station with butter or Vaseline, this will stop squirrels from climbing it as they will dislike the feeling and eventually slide down. This should allow our winged friends to get to the food put out for them.
Provide seed squirrels dislike
You can get lots of bird seed, but there are some in particular that squirrels won’t touch, such as any with Nyjer seeds or safflower seeds. Birds will happily munch away but squirrels should leave it alone.
Add peppers to your bird station
Peppers are actually safe for birds to eat but squirrels dislike the strong smell, so this should also be a deterrent for them.
Be safe
Whatever route you choose to deter squirrels, make sure it’s safe for both the bird and the pest. While we want to make sure all animals have their own safe spot in the garden, we do not want to harm any of them.
