How to stop cats using your garden as a toilet

The outdoors is full of pests, small and large. This can be frustrating as a garden owner, as you’re constantly having to think of ways to deter them so your time spent relaxing on your rattan garden furniture is not spoiled.

One animal that can sometimes become a pest is the cat, because they will poop wherever they please and, sometimes, this means your garden.

Why do cats poop in my garden?

Cats generally poop in specific places to mark their territory, but sometimes it’s just because your garden is accessible or they have become familiar with other animals in the area that they may like to prey on.

Unfortunately, if a neighbour’s cat is using your garden as its litter box, there’s not a whole lot that they can do about it. You can, however, do a few simple things to deter cats from your garden simply without causing them harm.

Cats don’t like the smell of citrus fruits like orange, limes, or lemons. You can scatter the peelings around your garden or squeeze the juices over your flower beds to create a strong scent that makes the cat think the territory has already been marked.

Other simple methods to deter cats is to scatter broken eggshells, as this can be uncomfortable on their feet. You may also look to plant strong smelling curry plants or throw coffee beans down. The strong scents should stop them from coming back to do their business.

If you’re happy for feline friends to visit your garden, even when nature is calling to them, then feel free to allow them. If not, consider these tips.
