Most garden furniture comes treated to withstand wet weather, but the more you can protect your furniture over the colder, wetter months, the more you will you extend the life of your furniture. Here’s a handy guide for protecting and storing your garden furniture:
Cleaning and treating
All garden furniture needs a good clean each year, especially as you prepare for the autumn and storing it away. Warm soapy water is usually all you’ll need, along with a fine brush or even a toothbrush to get into the weave of rattan and wicker. Hardwood pieces benefit from an annual treatment with an appropriate oil. Products like teak oil can be easily applied with a clean white cloth and will give your furniture a ‘just like new’ look.
Dry storage
Where possible, store smaller items and cushions indoors in a shed, garage or cellar, ideally wrapped in a layer of plastic sheeting. Ensure any textiles are dry prior to wrapping to avoid mould.
Protect with bespoke covers
Garland garden furniture covers are an excellent example of the ingenious designs now available. You can find protective covers made in a tough, laminated material for all furniture designs, from two-seater bistro tables and chairs, right up to ten-seater dining sets. Accessories like centre water shedding poles provide even better protection. Covers specifically made for garden benches and modular seating units are also widely available.
Garden furniture is a significant investment, so it makes sense to keep your pieces in top condition so you can enjoy them for years to come.
