Now is a great time to get your pots, planters, containers and raised beds ready for planting, so that once the threat of frost has receded and the days are getting warmer, you’ll be all set to make your garden beautiful.
Pots and planters
Empty plastic, ceramic and terracotta pots of last year’s root-bound, nutrient-poor soil and wipe down with a weak solution of water and washing up liquid. Ensure drainage holes are clear, fill the bottom two inches with gravel or small stones to further aid drainage, and fill with a specialist potting compost.
Wooden planters and raised beds
Large wooden planters and fixed raised beds usually have a polythene liner. Check this is still intact and, if you do find a tear, reline that section with another layer. If any of the wooden frame is damaged, affix extra battening inside the planter to restore the rigidity of the frame to avoid the cost and inconvenience of replace the whole structure.
Enrich your soil
Now, give your soil a thorough digging over. The aim is to weed out all remaining roots and to aerate and loosen compacted soil. The next step is to dig in compost or well-rotted organic matter to elevate the nutrient levels and re-enrich your soil. Depending on what you plan to grow, you may also want to improve your yields by adding a slow-release organic fertiliser.
Once the demanding work of preparing your planters is over, it’s time to sit back in your Outback reclining chairs and finalise your plans for a gorgeous show of fruits, vegetables and flowers this spring and summer.
