Snow trees, icicle lights and countless other Christmas decorations are inspired by the ideal of a white Christmas. Many of our yuletide traditions come from colder countries, with scenes of winter landscapes, reindeer and snowmen abound. Here are a few ideas to offset that chilly vibe and bring some cosy warmth to your decorations.
Select warm colours
If you have an open fire or a log burner, you already have the perfect way to heat up a space, but if not, simply adding pops of yellow, orange and red to a room can be effective. These are the colours of fire, and they have a strong psychological effect on our perception of temperature. A bowl of vibrant satsumas, a vase filled with poppies or a festive poinsettia will contribute to a feeling of warmth.
Snuggly blankets, soft throws and velvet cushions
Soft fabrics add a feeling of comfort and luxury, and are warmer to the touch than harder, reflective surfaces. Counterbalance your shiny baubles and snow-themed decorations by choosing woollen throws, tactile cushion covers and soft blankets. Deep colours like russets, ochres and bronzes elevate the luxe styling and make guests feel pampered.
Use candlelight
If you’ve ever passed the window of a restaurant lit by romantically flickering candles and longed to go in, you’ll know the power of candlelight in drawing our focus and making us feel comfortable. Christmas is an ideal time to be generous with advent candelabras, scented candles and gently glimmering tea lights.
So, even if we do have a white Christmas this year, these little touches will keep you feeling deliciously sheltered and snug.
