How to grow strawberries in time for summer

For many people, strawberries epitomise British summer in a way that no other food can quite match.

The prospect of lazing on your Norfolk Leisure LIFE garden furniture with a bowl of strawberries and cream is an appealing one – but you don’t always have to buy them in shops. In fact, you could easily grow your own strawberries this summer.

To start with, all you need to do is choose a place for them. Then, you will need to decide which type of strawberries you prefer. While large crops may be appealing to the eye, it is often the smallest strawberries that have the sweetest taste, so this will depends on personal preference.

Once the choice has been made, it’s time to think about planting. The best spot is one that will provide plenty of sunlight and soil that is fertile. While the soil needs to be drained regularly, you will also have to ensure that your strawberries get plenty of water if you want them to grow to their full potential.

For spring planting, pots will be better than garden beds if you want them to be ready for summer. Give the soil time to warm up, and then make sure you have the crown level with the surface of the soil. If you put it in deeper than that, it may rot.

On the other hand, if you do not put it far enough into the soil, it will become dried up. The planting depth must be just right.
