How to find an allotment

The numerous lockdowns over the past year have rekindled our love affair with our local areas and the natural world, and it’s therefore fitting that August 9th to August 15th is National Allotments Week. Here are three main ways you can start your journey towards your own slice of home-grown heaven.

Start by checking out your local council

The majority of allotments are owned and administered by local councils. To join the waiting list for your local allotments, visit the You Gov website – there’s a handy postcode tool for finding out the location of all the allotments in your area. Allotments are often tucked away, and you might be surprised by how many local options there are. Waiting lists can be long, so the sooner you sign up, the better.

Look up the National Allotment Society

The National Allotment Society is a great resource for investigating sites run by private landlords or other organisations, such as The Church of England. In addition, some allotment societies run their own waiting lists, as do a number of parish councils.

Set up your own land share

If you can’t find an allotment nearby, or waiting lists are excessively long, consider joining together with like-minded friends to go on the hunt for under-used plots of land in your local area. Setting up a community garden is quite a project, but one that brings enormous benefits to you and your local community. The Royal Horticultural Society website contains many ideas on how to get started.

An allotment offers fresh air, fresh produce, a wonderful camaraderie with your fellow plot owners and a new location for your rattan garden furniture.
