How to encourage birds to use your nest boxes

Nest boxes, which are also sometimes called bird houses, can be a great addition to your garden.

There are some things you should bear in mind however, if you want to sit back and watch the birds from your Supremo Bari garden furniture this summer.

Invest in more than one

Having several bird houses in your back garden will make birds more likely to embrace them.

This is because it will let them pick the one that is most suitable for their requirements, meaning they won’t have to compete with other birds for space at a single crowded box.

Install a range of houses

Setting up various types of bird houses will help you attract plenty of different species.

Standard bird houses with a single round entrance hole are used by blue tits and sparrows, but bigger birds like owls, kestrels and jackdaws will need a larger nest box. When it comes to robins or blackbirds, an open house with a platform for nesting on is what they prefer.

Position them carefully

The bird houses shouldn’t be positioned facing the south, because this means the sun will shine directly in and make the interiors too hot. Equally, facing them to the east or west might stop the chicks from getting enough sun to keep them warm.

The ideal positioning is facing to the northeast. The boxes must also be high enough to keep predators away – for example, between four and six feet above the ground.

Using these simple tips, you should begin to see a variety of birds flourishing in your garden this summer!
