How to care for wooden garden furniture

Whether you opt for more affordable pine furniture or hardwood pieces crafted in teak, early spring maintenance will ensure your garden furniture is ready for the coming season and extend its longevity.

Looking after softwood furniture

Softwood comes from gymnosperm trees. These are trees that have needles and produce cones, like pine, spruce and conifers. The wood itself isn’t necessarily softer, but it can be more susceptible to water damage and will weather more quickly if left untreated. Ranges like Charles Taylor garden furniture use sustainably sourced, treated softwood to produce a hard-wearing, rustic style.

Wash down your softwood furniture with a small amount of washing up liquid and warm water. Scrub gently to remove any moss and try to work along the grain, rather than against it, to avoid splintering. Once your furniture is completely dry, finish with either a coat of timber sealant or a wood stain designed specifically for softwood if the colour needs brightening.

Keeping your hardwood furniture in prime condition

Angiosperms are flowering trees, and these are the source of hardwoods like teak and oak. Hardwoods are more durable, more weather resistant and, consequently, more expensive. If you invest in hardwood furniture, you can expect it to last many years, but keeping it clean is still a priority. Again, a simple wash down with water and washing up liquid should be followed by application of a protective layer. In the case of hardwood, a little teak oil applied with a lint-free cloth should be enough to protect your furniture.

Get your maintenance done now, and you’ll be all set to enjoy your garden once the warmer weather arrives.
