How to approach weeds on your lawn

Sitting outside in the garden is one of the small pleasures of spring and summer – especially if you have suitable furniture, like Outback reclining chairs, to ensure comfort.

One thing that can spoil the experience, however, is unsightly weeds on your lawn. So, what is the best way to approach them?

Don’t cut the grass too short

It can be tempting to give your lawn a buzz cut once you get going with the mower, but this is actually counterproductive. It will make the grass weaker, and potentially create patches of bare ground that weeds flourish in.

Reseed or returf

If you already have patches on your lawn from some overenthusiastic mowing, reseed or returf them ahead of the summer.

The best time of year to do this sort of anti-weed garden maintenance is during the autumn or spring. Helping the grass to grow back will stop weeds returning in time for summer.

Remove them by hand

It is possible to get rid of weeds using chemical solutions, but if you’re not careful, they can also damage the lawn itself.

Unless your lawn is badly overrun with thick weeds, they can be removed much more effectively using a weeding tool or hand fork, which is also better for the environment.

Embrace them

Not all weeds are ugly or undesirable. The likes of daisies, dandelions and other wildflowers are technically classed as weeds, but they will also add colour and texture to your lawn.
