Picture the scene: you have spent hours turning your garden soil and carefully sprinkling grass seeds. Now, you are ready to sit back on your Charles Taylor garden furniture and do a bit of bird watching. Then, before you know it, the birds have zeroed in on your precious seeds.
The question is – how can you continue to attract birds while also keeping your grass seeds safe?
Offer an easier place to feed
Birds that are hungry and on the hunt for food sources will always gravitate towards the easiest option. This means you need to provide a source that requires less effort to access than your garden. Why not hang some bird feeders full of seed along your home’s treeline? Pretty soon, the birds will be making a beeline for the treeline.
Cover the soil with burlap
Laying some burlap over the soil is a great way to protect the seeds without scaring birds away from your garden. This material comes with holes that let the sunshine get to your seeds, but that are small enough to deny birds access to them. If birds cannot see the seeds, they will not think about eating them.
The best place to get burlap is from potato sacks.
Plant more seeds than you need
Maybe the simplest solution of all is just to scatter more grass seeds than you actually need. This way, your grass will still grow even if the birds do eat some of the seeds.
