Garden jobs for March

Spring officially starts on Monday, March 20, but before we get into the new season, there’s still a few things you can do in your garden before the weather starts to change. Now is the time to start planning your March garden jobs, including what you can start planting ready for the summer months. This way, you’ll be ready to prepare those Outback reclining chairs and enjoy the outdoors.

Flowers

March is a great time to start planting roses, as well as other similar shrubs. Existing roses should be pruned to encourage fresh growth, and you can begin to spread fertiliser over growing beds.

Fruit and veg

To start the process of growing your own tomatoes or aubergines, you can sow them indoors in pots until it’s time to take them outdoors. Potatoes can also be chitted (forced into growth) in containers and then popped into soil outside once they’re at 1 to 2 cm. Parsnips can join them in the soil once it starts getting warmer, as they will take a while to grow.

It’s also time to start preparing for strawberry season by starting them off in hanging baskets, ideally in a greenhouse if you have one.

Tidying

Grass will begin to get longer now, so it’s important to keep on top of your cuts as well as tidy up any debris, prune your plants and give the patio a sweep. You can also think about purchasing more features in your garden to help wildlife such as a water features or bird feeders.
