The best way to bring birds to your back garden is to feed them, but you have to approach it in the right way. If you want to be able to sit back on your Lifestyle garden furniture and watch a good variety of birds, here are some common errors to avoid.
Not changing the food enough
Bird food is no different to that eaten by humans in that it goes off – and this happens more quickly during bad weather. Failing to replenish your feeders on a regular basis can put birds off, or lead to them becoming ill.
Feeding them bread
Feeding bread to birds is something a lot of people do, but it is a mistake. Birds need nutritious food and bread does not provide those nutrients. Better choices for our feathered friends are options like sunflower seeds and non-salted peanuts.
Putting feeders in the wrong location
Where you put your feeders will do a lot to determine how many birds use them. If you put them in an exposed spot, no birds will go near them due to fear of predators. It is smarter to place them close to trees or hedges and try to make them as high up as possible.
Providing nothing but food
Feeding the birds is great, but their stay will be limited if you only provide food. Add a bird bath with fresh water and some nesting boxes if you want them to stick around.
Avoiding these common errors will ensure that you attract a variety of birds to your garden this year.
