Christmas trends come and go, but Christmas traditions tend to be the ones that become a permanent fixture of your Christmas routine. There are so many different traditions associated with Christmas, with origins all over the world. Read on to find out more about how Christmas has developed through the ages.
The 20s
While the origin of the Christmas tree dates back to 1800s Germany, the 1920s saw a rise in popularity with artificial Christmas trees, the most common being the Goose feather tree. People would cover sticks or metal with geese feathers. Other varieties included turkey, swan or ostrich feathers, if didn’t have access to geese.
The 40s
During the 40s, electric candles became increasingly popular. This is because of a single candle display a Boston architect introduced as a tradition for businesses between Christmas and New Year.
The 40s also saw the release of ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’, and watching it during the Christmas holidays has become a tradition of its own for some families.
The 80s
The 80s is where Christmas ornaments really took off, and the focus during this decade was adorning their artificial Christmas trees with Christmas decorations of all varieties.
The 90s
This decade saw the rise of designer trees. People would often try to emulate the trees created by designers for use in store or hotel windows.
Today
Fast forward to today, and we have kept many traditions over the years, even if artificial Christmas trees might look different to the goose feather-adorned trees of the 20s. Christmas traditions are different for every family, but you may look to earlier years to inspire new ones this December.
