A guide to LED Christmas lights

LED lights differ from incandescent Christmas lights in that the illumination is produced by light-emitting diodes, as opposed to filaments. This means that LED lights don’t become hot to the touch or burn out, and they are, consequently, safer. They are also more energy efficient, durable and long-lasting, making them much more eco-friendly.

Available in bright white, warm white and a host of colour options, each type of LED light will bring a distinctive style to your Christmas decorations.

Length and density of lights

Cluster LED lights create a dramatic effect, with lights grouped together for a less regimented look than string LED lights, where individual lights are evenly spaced. Icicle and net lights are great for exteriors, as they mark out roof and window lines, but they can work equally well indoors when used over a window or in a porch.

Style of illumination

The larger the individual bulb, the more you’ll be able to see each light separately, so, for example, a string of external LED globe lights makes a definitive statement when draped along the length of a fence. For a more star-like twinkling effect, try pin wire LED lights. These create a delicate cloud of tiny pinpoints of light and can work particularly well indoors, where you get a magical glow without too much overall illumination. Equally popular are starburst LED lights, which combine the uniformity of string lights with the ‘night sky’ effect of pin wire lights.

If you’re partial to a reindeer figurine or two, or you simply must have a sleigh in your front garden, the versatility and flexibility of LED lights allow you to create your own festive scene with lightweight individual figures.
