A bird lover’s guide to summertime sightings

Summer is the golden time of year for bird lovers. It is when the sun is shining (sometimes!) and it is possible to spend hours on your rattan garden furniture watching out for them.

You are guaranteed to get birds in your garden during summer too, because nature is in full bloom. Here is a guide to some that can be spotted.

Swallows

The swallow is one garden bird that can often be seen in summer – although they have sadly declined in number in recent years. It will be easy to tell if you do spot one, as they are very distinctive looking. The feathers on their chins are red and those at the side of the tail are longer than normal.

Chaffinches

This is one type of bird that you have a great chance of seeing, because they are common in British gardens. A male chaffinch will have breast and cheek feathers that are a mix of orange and pink. Those on its head and around its face are a blend of grey and blue. Female chaffinches have slightly drabber colouring, so are a bit trickier to pick out – though no less beautiful.

Goldfinches

The goldfinch is a truly beautiful bird and will brighten up your garden if it appears. The feathers on its face are a pleasing contrast of black, white and red, while its breast is white and brown. Its wings are mostly black and brown, but there is a strong streak of yellow there too.

Why not keep a look out for these three birds during summer?
