Before you put up any Christmas decorations, you will need to give your house a thorough clean. Making a start on this now will save you a lot of stress nearer the time. Here is a guide to getting ready for the festive decorations.
When to prepare
The ideal time for pre-Christmas prep is October – November at the latest. This means you are not frantically trying to get the cleaning done and get the decorations up while also organising Christmas shopping and parties. To make the job less daunting, split into three week-long parts.
First Week
This should be for deep cleaning your kitchen. Wash out the oven by adding some oven cleaner and letting it soak in overnight. Take out all of the racks to scrub them too. Then it will be time to tackle the hobs on top of the oven. Get rid of any dried-on food or grease. Finally, go through the fridge and bin out-of-date foods before emptying it and wiping all of the shelves.
Second Week
Clean the living room in the second week. This is where the tree with fairy lights and other key decorations go. Prep should involve a deep vacuuming of carpets, sofas and chairs, dusting and polishing of surfaces and temporary removal of items to create space for the decorations.
Third Week
This week will be for bathroom cleaning. Give the bath and toilet a good scrub and wash the floor. You should also clean the skirting boards.
Do your pre-Christmas clean in blocks and it will be much easier.
