How to dress for bird watching success

When you are new to bird watching, you may not realise how important your clothing choices are.

Certain colours and types of clothes are an absolute no-no, either because they will scare birds off or because they will make life harder for you.

For example, something you should be aware of is the colours of your outfit. Bright coloured clothes are a bad idea – particularly vivid neon shades. They will make you stand out a mile and will spook a lot of birds. You should also keep the colour white to a minimum, because it is regarded by some birds as a danger sign. This is true if you are watching them from the Supremo Tuscany furniture in your garden, as well as if you are venturing further afield.

What you should always aim for is a clothing colour scheme that matches your surroundings. If you are bird watching in a forest or woods, clothes that are dark brown and/or green will fit perfectly. For more open rural spots, opt for beige and light green clothes.

It is not just about what the birds like though – you must also consider what will be practical and comfortable for you. No matter how warm the weather is, avoid short-sleeved tops and short trousers. These put you at risk of insect bites, stings and other injuries. You will be safer wearing breathable fabrics that cover your skin.

The key to getting bird watching clothes right is to be sensible, make sure you’re comfortable and that you don’t frighten your feathered friends away.
