Four top birdwatching tips for beginners

Birdwatching is a hobby that can be both relaxing and fascinating.

The sound of twittering birds is known to have a calming effect, which is balanced by the excitement of spotting a species for the first time. If you are new to the activity, read on for tips to ensuring you have a brilliant birdwatching experience.

Invest in good binoculars

A really good pair of binoculars can mean the difference between mediocre and marvellous birdwatching. Each species of bird has its own distinctive shape and blend of colours, and you want to be able to really see every detail of them. So, don’t cut corners on the peepers.

Purchase a guide

There are lots of different types of birds, and without a guide, newcomers may struggle to differentiate between species.

Part of the point of birdwatching is to learn more about the various species and where they can be found. Having a good guide will help you on your way to achieving that.

Fill up the feeders

If you buy bird tables or feeders and fill them, you won’t even have to leave home to indulge your birdwatching passion.

The foods our feathered friends eat range from bird nuts and seeds, fat balls and mealworms. Therefore, if you have a choice of feeders offering a variety of food, you will inevitably attract a whole range of species.

Remember to record what you see!

You don’t have to list every species you spot, but keeping some form of record will help you memorise the different birds, increase your knowledge and spot patterns. It can be fun to share these records with other birdwatchers, too!
