What is the most traditional Christmas decoration

At Christmas, putting the decorations up is one of the most exciting ways to get into the festive spirit and start the official Christmas Day countdown. Most people have their own traditions, but all decorations have origins that stem from somewhere, and these traditions tend to gradually change over the years. But what is the most traditional Christmas decoration according to history? To find out the answer, it is important to analyse the most popular Christmas decorations of today and where they may have originally started.

The Christmas tree

A home is not completely decorated without the traditional Christmas tree. But why do we bring in this greenery from the outside and adorn it with decorations? Well, no one can be one hundred per cent sure when we started using fir trees, but it can certainly be traced back to at least 1000 years ago.

Medieval Germany had ‘Paradise Trees’ which were decorated with apples, and this could also be a form of what we now know as the Christmas tree.

Whatever the original source, we can safely say that Christmas trees have been around a long, long time.

Stockings

Stockings have been hung over the fireplace for many years, and they have also been hung in other various places such as the end of a child’s bed or on doorknobs, ready for Santa to deliver their presents. Similarly to Christmas trees, the exact origin of stockings is not known, it is only known that the legend of St. Nicholas in 280 A.D. who inspired Santa delivered presents to children who needed them most and this legend took on a life of its own.

Mistletoe

Supposedly, mistletoe can be traced back to the ancient Druids. However, this is also not certain. Norse mythology also refers to mistletoe as a sign of friendship and love, so we know it has been around a long time. The actual tradition of kissing underneath the mistletoe can be traced back to 1784 in England, so we know that it has definitely been a Christmas decoration for hundreds of years.

What’s the answer?

It is hard to pinpoint exactly where each Christmas decoration comes from, although we know that most decorations have been around in some form for hundreds if not thousands of years. Both Christmas trees and stockings have definitely been around for over a thousand years alone, so it is safe to say they are some of the most traditional Christmas decorations you will find.
