Three ways to garden sustainably

Getting out and working in the garden is good for your mental health, but doing so sustainably is even better for it. All that is meant by sustainable gardening is methods that do not damage the environment. This blog will outline a few of them, in case you wish to give it a go.

Make homemade compost

Compost is great for improving your soil and helping your plants to grow, but the homemade variety is more sustainable. The first reason for this is because it does not include fertilisers, which can be damaging to the environment. The second is that making your own compost lets you recycle garden waste instead of throwing it away.

Aim for water neutral

This is about reducing your water usage, as well as cutting the size of your bills. How you do it is by collecting rainwater for watering your plants with, rather than using tap water.

Britain is rarely short of rain and it often prevents us from sitting outside on our rattan garden furniture – even in summer. This is a way to make the best of that situation.

Pick wildlife-friendly plants

If you are planting flowers in your garden, you can improve its sustainability through the ones you select. Certain kinds of plants are particularly good for attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies – for example, wallflowers, honeysuckle and fuchsia. You should also try to avoid the use of pesticides in your garden, as most are not environmentally friendly.

These three handy tips will help your gardening to, in turn, help the environment.
