The summer is when gardens are at their most beautiful. They are bursting with life and colour, which makes all the hard work feel worth it. You should certainly take time to enjoy your garden during the season, but there are some jobs to do too. Here are three of the main ones.
Hoe your borders
You do not want to remove every weed – just keep them from getting out of hand. Don’t jump straight for chemical weed killers though, unless the situation is severe. You will be better off using a combination of a hoe and your hands. This can be hard going in hot weather, so take regular breaks, and don’t forget to sit back on your Lifestyle garden furniture and sip a cold drink from time to time.
Water your plants
Watering the plants is particularly important in summer. Don’t splash it around indiscriminately though, as this is just a waste. When you are watering plants, you should target the roots rather than the foliage. Pour the water towards where they are planted in the soil. If the leaves and flowers get too wet, they can develop fungus.
Practice lawn care
If your lawn has grown out, it will not need frequent watering. Let it find natural water sources, as this will make the roots dig deeper. When you are watering it, pick the right times of day. Add water during the evening or early morning, because the sun is less likely to cause it to evaporate.
Take the time to do these maintenance jobs and your garden will stay lovely throughout the summer.
