How to protect your garden furniture over winter

Although winter may feel a long way off, now is a good time to plan for the care and storage of your garden furniture over the winter months.

Covers are a must

Hopefully, your rattan garden furniture has been in use throughout the summer, and you’ve been able to relax and enjoy your garden from the comfort of a Supremo Bari sofa. Synthetic rattan is treated to resist mould and to withstand the heat of the sun and the onslaught of summer rainstorms. Weatherproofing means that the powder-coated aluminium frame is well protected and robust, but you will extend the lifespan of your garden furniture considerably if you add an extra layer of protection in the form of well-fitting covers.

Garland garden furniture covers, for example, come in a wide range of shapes and sizes and are made from durable, PVC-coated polyester. Opting for covers with a drawstring or tie-down option ensures a snug fit and an even better level of protection.

Clean before you store

Whether your furniture is metal, rattan or wood, it is advisable to give every piece a thorough clean before covering and storing. Hoover with the upholstery attachment first to remove any food debris or trapped vegetation, and then wash down with water and a small amount of washing up liquid. It’s vital that you do this on a dry day so that your furniture has a chance to dry off completely.

Once everything is safely covered or stored in a shed or garage, you can relax in the knowledge that it will be in tip-top shape when the first spring sunshine arrives next year.
