People often concentrate on the tree and the walls of their homes when putting up Christmas decorations – but you mustn’t neglect the mantelpiece!
This is a focal point for the eye within your living room, and offers you an opportunity to get creative. Read on to learn how to turn your mantelpiece into a winter wonderland.
Festive garlands
At the heart of your creation should be a garland.
This is usually made from artificial leaves. You can get green ones with berries and a dusting of snow, silver tips, or gold ones, depending on your taste.
After the garland has been arranged, the next step is to add some festive baubles. You may opt to put one in the middle and two more at opposite ends, making sure that they are evenly spaced and of the same size.
Following that, you can add some extra pieces that will bring your mantelpiece creation to life. This is where you get the chance to exercise your flair and eye for an attractive layout.
Another couple of baubles of smaller sizes than the first three makes for a good start, but they should be contrasting in both style and colour.
Decorative ornaments
In the middle of your display, why not add a Christmas star?
You can also buy spheres made of conifer twigs that will add a further dimension and contrasting textures to your decoration.
You can finish off with candles placed at either side for soft, atmospheric lighting. Pre-lit candles can be purchased so as not to cause a fire hazard.
However you decide to dress your home this Christmas, everything you need can be purchased from your local garden centre.
