Nasturtiums make for a wonderful addition to any garden. Their bold colours and potent scent are a feast for the senses that can be enjoyed while kicking back on your Supremo Carina garden furniture. This guide will cover all you need to know about growing nasturtiums.
When to plant them
If you want to plant the seeds in your garden beds, the best time to do so is in either April or May. By that time, the soil should have warmed up after winter. You should plant them in a spot where they will get plenty of sun exposure, and you will need the soil to be free draining.
A curious aspect of nasturtiums is that they grow better in poor quality soil – the more fertile it is, the fewer flowers that bloom. You can plant nasturtium seeds in March, but keep them in plant pots until later in the spring, because they need warmth. When you are planting, put the seeds around 20-30cm away from each other and plant at a depth of 2cm. They should reach full flower in mid-summer.
How to care for them
They will need to be watered when it is dry until they become established. Be careful not to waterlog them though. Once they are established, they can survive fine without watering.
In terms of fertiliser, something similar applies. All you will need is a light covering, because a lot of fertiliser reduces the number of flowers. Overall maintenance is low, as nasturtiums are hardy annual plants.
Putting nasturtiums in your garden is something you will likely never regret.
