Four garden jobs for January

No one would consider January to be a peak month for gardening, but there is still work you can do! Much of it is about planning and preparation. Get to work now, and you will have a glorious garden to enjoy from your Charles Taylor garden furniture once summer rolls around.

Here are the top January garden jobs.

Order your spring seeds

In most cases, spring will be the best time for planting seeds – but January is the ideal month to get them ordered. Make sure you place orders for seeds that are suitable for spring planting though, which means the likes of climbing roses, cornflowers and marigolds.

Keep the birds fed

If you have feeders in your garden, January is the time they will most be needed. Birds struggle to find food in the depths of winter, so keeping your feeders filled will help them a lot. Choose bird foods that are high in fat, like fat balls and suet cakes, because birds need it for energy during the cold months.

Plant vegetables in pots

There are some vegetable types that can be planted in pots during January and then grown indoors. Examples include basil, aubergines and chillies. Keep them somewhere with a regulated temperature and you will reap the harvest for your plate come summer.

Plant flowers

This is true of some flowers too, including delphiniums, sweet peas, dahlias and geraniums. Plant them either in pots or seed trays with compost and keep them somewhere warm.

January is about helping wildlife and getting your garden ready for the summer.
