A guide to making compost for your garden

Making garden compost yourself can help your plants to grow while saving you some money. It is not difficult to do either, as most of the items you need are ones that can be commonly found around the house.

Keep reading for a guide to making your own homemade compost.

What materials can you use?

There are plenty of garden items that you can use to make compost, including weeds, grass cuttings, bits of shredded wood and dead leaves. These should be combined with scraps that come from your kitchen, such as crushed eggshells, thin cardboard and tea leaves.

What you want for the best results is a mix of brown and soft green compost material.

Where should you keep it?

The sight of a rotting compost heap will not exactly enhance the view from your rattan garden furniture. Therefore, you will need a container for your compost.

A compost bin will be ideal, but compost cones will do just as well if you have limited space. These containers do not just keep the compost material hidden from sight; they also assist with the composting process by breaking the materials down via controlled decomposition.

What can you do to speed this up?

You can help decomposition happen more quickly by turning the materials in the bin over once each month. This will give them some air. You can also put a compost accelerator in to speed up the process. When it turns black, it’s ready to use.

Why not try making your own compost for the garden this spring?
