gardening lawn care

Love your lawn this August

August is one of the prime times of year when it comes to using your lawn, so it stands to reason that it might require a little extra care during this peak period for your garden too.

Lawn tasks for August

Get the mower out

For a tidy appearance, mow the lawn more than once a week during this period of rapid growth.

During hot, dry spells, set the mower blades a little higher to avoid cutting the grass too short. Gradually raise the height of mover blades as late summer arrives, as grass growth will start to slow down.

Seasonal gremlins?

If your lawn turns brown during dry weather, there’s no reason to panic; it will soon go back to green once autumn brings more rain.

Avoid using high-nitrogen fertiliser, as the new growth it stimulates will only be damaged by the more inclement weather of autumn.

If ants invade your lawn, brush out any nests. Do this during dry weather, and as a prelude to mowing.

A fresh start?

Late August to early September is the perfect time to prepare your garden for the laying of a new turf or seed lawn.

If you do plan to create a new lawn, ensure the site is free from stones and weeds. A weedkiller containing Glyphosate is ideal for controlling perennial weeds at this point, and a second treatment can be given if necessary.

This is a good time to recut any lawn edges, and add lawn edging for easier maintenance in future.

Regularly resite any items that sit on the grass, such as trampolines, hot tubs or rattan garden furniture, to avoid a patchy lawn.
